Caregiver & Daycare Handoff
Your child does best when every adult responds the same calm way. Build a one-page sheet for daycare, preschool, grandparents or a sitter — what's going on, the routine, what to say, and what to do after an accident.
Helping my child with pooping
Live previewWhat's going on
My child is working on feeling comfortable pooping. Please keep things calm and low-pressure.
Bathroom routine
- • Offer a relaxed, optional sit of about 5 minutes after lunch or snack, with feet on a footstool. No pressure and no comments if nothing happens.
Phrases that help
- "You can sit for a minute if you want. You can get up any time."
- "Thanks for telling me."
- "Accidents happen. Let's get you changed."
- "Your body knows how to do this. I'm right here."
Please avoid
- • "Just push" or "try harder"
- • Comparisons, like "big kids don't wear diapers"
- • Treats, prizes, or consequences tied to pooping
- • Asking again and again whether they need to poop
- • Mentioning accidents or smells in front of other children
If there's an accident
- • Stay calm and neutral — no scolding and no comments about smell.
- • Change them privately, away from other children.
- • Spare clothes and wipes are in their bag or cubby.
- • Put soiled clothes in a sealed bag to send home — no need to rinse.
- • Please don't take away activities or treats because of an accident.
- • Let me know at pickup, quietly, so I can note it.
Please tell me at pickup
- • Any poops (and roughly when)
- • Any accidents or leaks
- • Any holding, hiding, or signs of discomfort
- • If they asked for a diaper or pull-up

Parent
Signs to tell a parent about
These can need a doctor's attention. Please let a parent know the same day.
- No bowel movement for 5 or more days
- Blood in the stool or on the toilet paper
- Vomiting, fever, or a swollen or very painful belly
- Stool leaking or soiling in a child who was previously trained
- Weight loss, poor appetite, or a child who seems unwell
- Pain or distress that is getting worse rather than better
Please tell a parent the same day if you notice any of these, and follow your usual health and emergency procedures.
Made with the free Poop Peace Caregiver Handoff (pooppeace.com/tools/caregiver-handoff). Educational content only. Not a substitute for medical advice from your child's pediatrician.
Everything stays in this browser. Nothing is sent to Poop Peace, and the sheet only includes a name if you type one.
How to hand it over
A short conversation plus the printed sheet works better than either on its own.
Fill in what's true right now
Pick the pattern, keep the phrases that sound like your family, and untick anything that doesn't fit.Print it or send the text
Hand the sheet over at drop-off, or paste the text into the daycare app or a family group chat.Update it when the plan changes
Your sheet is saved on this device, so editing it next week takes a minute.
