In the hard moment, it's hard to find the right words. Pick what's happening, your child's age and the tone that sounds like you — and get short, calm, pressure-free things to say.

3 scripts for asks for a diaper. Each one is short on purpose — say it once, calmly, and then let it be.

    The moment

Your child asks for a diaper to poop

    Instead of

    • "Ugh, again?"

    Try saying

    • "Diaper time. Thank you for telling me."

Why it helps: A calm yes makes asking feel safe, which keeps your child telling you when they need to go.

    The moment

Your child asks for a diaper to poop

    Instead of

    • "No more diapers — you're a big kid now."

    Try saying

    • "Yes, you can have your diaper for poop. Let's put it on in the bathroom."

Why it helps: Saying yes keeps poop coming regularly, and moving the location is a gentle first step.

    The moment

Your child asks for a diaper to poop

    Instead of

    • "Why can't you just use the potty like you do for pee?"

    Try saying

    • "Thanks for telling me your body needs to poop. I'll get your diaper and stay close."

Why it helps: Noticing the body signal is the skill to praise — not where the poop ends up.

Scripts are chosen from a fixed, editor-approved library — nothing is generated, and nothing you pick is sent to us. Educational content only. Not a substitute for medical advice from your child's pediatrician.

    How to use these scripts

Words matter less than the calm behind them. A script just gives you something steady to reach for.

    1. Pick one or two phrases

Choose the ones that sound most like you. Fewer phrases, said the same way every time, beat a long list.
    2. Say it once, then step back

One calm sentence, then quiet company. Repeating or explaining tends to add pressure.
    3. Share them with every caregiver

Save your favorites to the handoff sheet so daycare, grandparents and sitters use the same words.

When to contact your child's pediatrician

Contact your child's pediatrician promptly if you notice any of these.

    • No bowel movement for 5 or more days
    • Blood in the stool or on the toilet paper
    • Vomiting, fever, or a swollen or very painful belly
    • Stool leaking or soiling in a child who was previously trained
    • Weight loss, poor appetite, or a child who seems unwell
    • Pain or distress that is getting worse rather than better
    • Anything that worries you — you know your child best

Poop Peace is educational. It does not diagnose or treat. If you are worried about your child, contact their pediatrician or local emergency services.
